Loyola University Chicago to Host
Japan Education Week: Disaster, Recovery, Resilience

What:
From Tuesday, April 5, through Friday, April 8, Loyola University Chicago will host a week of educational events that explore the cultural, geological, and technological contexts of the recent disaster in Japan. The series, “Japan Education Week: Disaster, Recovery, and Resilience,” is organized by Loyola Responds, an internal standing committee composed of individuals from across the University that serves as a coordinating body to assess, plan, and guide Loyola’s response to humanitarian crises and disasters.

The events are all free and open to the public. Donations to support recovery efforts will be accepted and encouraged. Please visit jknight@luc.edu, or 773.508.3500.

Tuesday, April 5
– Atomic Crisis: Historical View of Japanese & American Popular Culture
– Lecture and discussion featuring Dr. Cranston Knight, professor of history at St. Augustine College
– 4-5 p.m., Quinlan Life Sciences Center, Room 312

Wednesday, April 6
– The Dynamic Earth-Genesis of Earthquakes and Tsunamis
– Brown Bag Luncheon led by Dr. David Slavsky, director of the Center for Science and Math Education
– Noon-1 p.m., Crown Center, Room 530

Friday, April 8
– Japanese Cultural Response to Crisis
– Brown Bag Luncheon featuring Dr. Janet Fair-Christianson, faculty member in the modern languages and literature department
– 1-2 p.m., Crown Center, Room 530
– Nuclear Reactors and the Recent Nuclear Accident in Japan
– After class/work chat with Dr. Raymond Nackoney, associate professor in the natural sciences department
– 4-5 p.m., Quinlan Life Sciences Center, Room 312
