Loyola University Chicago with Patron of the Year Award
Environmentally Friendly Building Earns University Distinguished Honor

CHICAGO, December 9, 2009 – Loyola University Chicago, with its Silver Level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified Richard J. Klarchek Information Commons building, has been named a winner of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s 2009 Patron of the Year awards.

The 2009 Patron of the Year award winners were honored at a recent luncheon held at the University Club of Chicago. The Chicago Architecture Foundation recognized six outstanding patrons of Chicago architecture, and Loyola was honored in the Institutional category, along with The Homan Arthington Foundation. Other category nominees included Mercy Housing Lakefront / Harold Schiff, Public Building Commission of Chicago, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana, The Art Institute of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Chicago.

It is indeed an honor to have the Klarchek Information Commons recognized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, said Wayne Magdziarz, chief of staff and vice president of capital planning at Loyola. Loyola is proud of its commitment to sustainability initiatives and we are very grateful to all of the members of our design team who played a part in this exciting project.

About the Patron of the Year Awards
The Chicago Architecture Foundation presents the prestigious Patron of the Year awards to outstanding clients of architecture in the Chicago area. Winning patrons are evaluated by a multidisciplinary jury that considers the client’s contribution to a project alongside a project’s design merit.

The awards were initiated in 2004 when Steven G.M. Stein, partner at the law firm of Stein, Ray & Harris, LLP, suggested that, for all of the public attention lavished on outstanding architecture in Chicago, few recognize the leading role of clients of architecture. Good architecture, Stein said, requires more than a good architect. It requires a great client-a risk-taker.

About the Richard J. Klarchek Information Commons
Completed in 2008, Loyola’s Klarchek Information Commons is a completely digital research library that occupies a magnificent site on the shores of Lake Michigan, on the University’s Lake Shore Campus. The building, designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, in conjunction with Stuttgart, Germany-based Transsolar, features numerous natural and mechanical building systems and strategies that result in a totally integrated design. The building’s form, space, function, materials, and construction all act to re-enforce and support each other in creating an environment that maximizes comfort while reducing energy consumption by approximately 50 percent.

The Klarchek Information Commons employs a number of technologies that provide Loyola with a clean, comfortable, and energy-efficient extension to the existing Cudahy Library. Primary features include a double-skin façade, which allows passive management of heat flow and natural ventilation throughout the year. Spanning the interior of this façade is a mechanically operable blind that adjusts daylight levels and heat transmittance from the west sun. Radiant concrete slab ceilings provide thermal mass to cool in the summer and heat in the winter. The building also uses water as a means to heat and cool, which is vastly more efficient than forced air systems. This system uses existing campus facilities to deliver the heated or chilled water to the building. Finally, a green roof works to absorb rainwater and relieve some of the runoff into Lake Michigan.

These very sophisticated systems are controlled by an array of sensors monitoring the temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels within the building, while additional sensors factor the outside conditions. The windows, dampers, shades, and blinds all respond to this climate data and adjust automatically.
