Cardinal George to Attend Reopening of Loyola’s Signature Chapel Newly Renovated Madonna della Strada Chapel to Reopen September 13
Loyola University Chicago will host a Mass of Thanksgiving on Thursday, September 13, 2007, to celebrate the long-awaited reopening of the renovated Madonna della Strada Chapel on the University’s Lake Shore Campus. More than 500 people are expected to attend and His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., will preside over the Mass and consecrate the chapel’s new altar.
The University’s signature chapel, completed in 1939, was under renovation for over a year. It now features a refurbished interior, including enhanced artwork and new icons, an inlaid marble floor imported from Italy, a new baptismal font, new heating and cooling systems, and flexible seating. With these completed changes, the chapel’s new interior has been renovated in a manner consistent with the original art deco designs.
