Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center Announces Award Winners

CHICAGO, October 21, 2004 The winners and Keynote Speaker of the 2004 Illinois Family Business of the Year Awards have been announced by the Family Business Center at Loyola University Chicago. The award recognizes Illinois-based family businesses that demonstrate a strong commitment to both business and family. The Keynote speaker for this year’s 2004 Family Business Awards is Michael Birck, Chairman of Tellabs.

This year more than 400 nominations were received for the three categories, small under 50 employees, medium 51-249 employees, and large over 250 employees. In the small business category the winner this year is Brady & Associates Construction of Bloomington. The medium-sized award winner is Hester Decorating Company of Skokie, and in the large business category, the winner is Oberweis Dairy Company of Aurora, who is also the winner of the Community Service Award.

Brady & Associates Construction & Development has been a family- owned business since 1971 and was started as a single-family home builder. Through the economics hardships of the times the Brady’s were forced into reorganization and began a real estate company that continues to thrive to this day.   They have now expanded into the Real Estate Brokerages and Development business. Currently, Ed, Bob, and Bill Brady run the company jointly.

Hester Decorating Company has been a family-owned business since 1968 and was started by Tom Hester, who was a foreman for a large downtown
contractor and decided to take his creative flair out on his own.   It began as a small three person start up and has now blossomed into a company with a crew of over 60
employees. Hester Decorating is well known for its creativity in decorating and unique style. Through the years Tom’s sons Jeff, Danny, Steve and Tommy and
also his wife, Marianne have played a large role in the enterprise.

Oberweis Dairy has been a family owned business since 1915 and was founded by Peter Oberweis. In 1927 the company organized as Peter began
processing milk and delivering it door to door. The company grew slowly and in 1951 Oberweis opened its first retail store and introduced ice cream into its
product mix. Currently the third generation Jim and Elaine run the company. They have grown from one retail store with about 3,500 home delivery customers to 24 retail stores with over 35,000 home delivery customers.

The Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center created this award 11 years ago to recognize significant and positive contributions made by family

Since its creation in 1990, the Family Business Center has remained committed to the task of recognizing the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of
family business to our local and national society and economy. As an internationally recognized pioneer and leader in family business development and research,
the Family Business Center developed the Family Business of the Year Awards program as a way to make the accomplishments of family businesses in the State of
Illinois known to the public and to other family businesses. The awards program is made possible through the support of our corporate sponsors, Harris Bank, Katten, Muchin, Zavis, Rosenman; Grant Thornton; Mass Mutual, Pearre and Associates, McDermott, Will & Emery, and the business owning families who are members of the Family Business Center.
