We are now housed on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of BVM hall, sitting atop the new Institute for Environmental Sustainability. (map) Physical Address: 6349 N. Kenmore Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660.
This is an exciting development. Clearly, sustainability will be an important discipline in the coming decades. What better way for our university to place greater emphasis on the increasingly important STEM fields than with a new institute! I know many of my colleagues look forward to this new opportunity for interdisciplinary contact and collaboration with our downstairs neighbors.
My interest is especially piqued by the “Risk Assessment & Modeling” concentration in the new IES Bachelors of Science curriculum. There are three 300-level stats courses required (very good!), but it seems ripe for a math modeling component, as well. Surely some facility with differential equations—which play a critical role in modeling and projection—would be expected from these majors. No?
