FAQ

What is the new Student Center being called?

  • The new Student Center, phase 3 of the Reimagine Campaign, has recently been named the Arnold J. Damen, S.J. Student Center. Fr. Damen founded Loyola University Chicago in 1870. See the blog post dated May 23, 2012 for more information on the namesake of the building. The New Student Center is being constructed in the same place as the former Alumni Gym that was built in 1924 and which has a rich history not only at Loyola, but state-wide.

When will these projects be done?

  • The Halas Sports Center inside renovations are scheduled to be completed by the start of the Fall 2011 school year. The Gentile Arena construction project, which includes a complete face-lift on the inside of the arena, is scheduled to be complete by November 2011 in time for the Men’s Basketball season. The New Student Center construction project is scheduled to be complete and open by March of 2013. In addition, the Cuneo Hall project, which is replacing Damen Hall, is scheduled to be completed by August of 2012. All of these dates are subject to change and we will update you on any changes to those dates.

Where will offices be relocated during construction?

  • Fortunately, very few offices and services will have to be relocated as a result of all of these construction projects. Currently, the Campus Recreation Department is being housed out of the Norville Center for Collegiate Athletics as well as the Centennial Forum Student Union. Campus-Rec will move back into the Halas Sports Center when the building opens in August 2011.  All of the offices that will move into the Alumni Student Center currently have offices that will simply move into the building as it opens during the 2012-2013 school year.

How am I going to get around on campus during construction? Is there ADA processes in place with regards to people with disabilities accessing buildings during construction?

  • It is our hope that we will communicate all way-finding material in our Campus Map portion of this site. We will be diligent in providing signage in and around construction areas and are working with Facilities Management to make sure that all areas of construction are ADA compliant.

What areas will move into the new Student Center?

The New Student Center will include:

  • The Office of the VP of Student Development
  • Dean of Students Office
  • Student Activities and Greek Affairs
  • Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs
  • Campus Ministry

  • Dining Hall
  • Dining Services
  • Meeting Rooms
  • PNC Bank
  • Loyola Spirit Shop (to be named later)

When can we start to make reservations for the new student center?

  • The Department of Student Centers is currently working on a number of different policies for the new facility including space reservations. It is our hope to have a system in place by August of 2012.

What is happening to Gentile?

  • Currently, Gentile is be transformed from “push back” bleacher style seating to more arena “bowl” style seating. This will increase seating capacity and make Gentile feel more “arena” like.

What will happen to CFSU?

  • A definitive plan for CFSU has not been finalized as of this time. While there are many rumors as to what CFSU will be transformed into, nothing has been decided. The re-purposing of CFSU is Phase 5 of the Reimagine Campaign.
