Campuses remaining open during NATO Summit

Loyola Community,

As you know, the City of Chicago will play host to The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit on Sunday, May 20 and Monday, May 21. In addition to these dates, a number of other summit-related events and protests will occur prior to May 20. Human Resources and the Department of Campus Safety are writing to remind you that Loyola’s campuses will remain open during the summit dates.

From a security standpoint, our focus is on the Water Tower Campus, which will see an increased presence of campus safety officers throughout the weekend. The Department of Campus Safety will also continue to safeguard the Lake Shore and Health Sciences campuses. We continue to work with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department to receive any necessary updates related to security. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Department of Campus Safety at 773.508.6039 with safety-related questions or concerns.

Given the distances between our campuses and the NATO Summit, the most likely impact for faculty, staff, and students will be increased travel times to and from campus. Please be aware that there will be a number of road closures and Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) reroutes in the coming days, and Metra is taking extra precaution as well. Because of these challenges, we encourage you to plan ahead to allow more time for your commute to work/class, to schedule paid-time off, or to make alternative work arrangements with your supervisor.

For more on the summit, including road closures and parking changes, please visit www.chicagonato.org. To stay on top of CTA changes, visit www.transitchicago.com. Finally, for Metra riders, please visit www.metrarail.com.

Sincerely,

Thomas M. Kelly
Senior VP for Administrative Services and Chief Human Resources Officer
