Tibetan monk’s sand mandala on display in Norville

Venerable Ngawang Chojor, born in Tibet, maintains the spiritual and artistic practice of sand mandala construction. He has constructed many mandalas and was even featured in the movie Seven Years in Tibet starring Brad Pitt. In honor of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s upcoming visit to Loyola, the Tibet Center and the University are proud to host Lama Ngawang as he constructs his elaborate traditional meditative design.

The mandala, which is viewed as a vehicle promoting enlightenment and compassion,  will be available for viewing during its construction and until His Holiness visits on April 26. After His Holiness leaves, Lama Ngawang will lead a moving ceremony in which he will sweep the sand into an urn.

The mandala will be on display at the Norville Center, room 114, from now until April 25. Be sure to stop by and check this impressive process out.
