New HSD library director appointed

April 11, 2012

Loyola Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Gail Hendler, MLS, as Associate Provost and Director of the Health Sciences Library. Gail received an undergraduate degree in English Literature from Lehman College and a masters in library science (MLS) from Queens College, both in New York City. Gail comes to Loyola with a nationally recognized background in health sciences librarianship and has gained extensive experience with educational outreach to support curriculum, research, and patient care goals. Gail has been professionally active both nationally and locally and currently serves as the Chair of the MLA/Thomson Reuters Doctoral Fellowship Jury. Gail joins us from the Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library where she served as Head of Information and Access Services and previously held a variety of positions in New York City that include: Information Specialist for the New York Academy of Medicine; Clinical Medical Librarian at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Assistant Curator and Coordinator of Outreach Services for the Frederick L. Ehrman Medical Library at the NYU School of Medicine; and Director of the Lenox Hill Hospital Health Sciences Library.

Ms. Hendler’s experience and vision will be very important as we move forward to redistribute library resources to better meet the information needs of our campus, revision our library collection in the face of continually rising costs, and develop a strong working relationship with our new partners at Trinity Health. She will begin her tenure here on June 1, 2012, but is already involved in several important discussions regarding library space and services.

Also, sincere thanks and congratulations go to Jeanne Sadlik for her service during the past year as Acting Director of the Library. She has done an excellent job of advancing the library in this role, and I look forward to her continued leadership. Based upon a recommendation by Gail Hendler, Jeanne will be promoted to Associate Director of the Health Sciences Library, effective July 1.

Please join me in welcoming Gail and congratulating Jeanne!
