Lenten season is upon us
The Lenten season begins Wednesday, and the University is holding a series of Masses and services on Ash Wednesday at both the Lake Shore and Water Tower campuses for any Loyolans who wish to attend.
The blessed ashes placed on attendees’ foreheads during the Ash Wednesday services come from palm branches burned on Palm Sunday the previous year. Wearing ashes on the forehead represents human morality and penance, and this particular religious gesture has been a common practice for centuries.
Loyola will host eight ash distribution services on the Lake Shore Campus. Each will last about 25 minutes. The services and Masses will begin at the following times:
- 9:15 a.m., Service, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 10:15 a.m., Service, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- Noon, Mass, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 1:30 p.m., Service, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 3:30 p.m., Service, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 5 p.m., Mass, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 7 p.m., Service, Madonna della Strada Chapel
- 9 p.m., Mass, Madonna della Strada Chapel
There will be three ash distribution services at the Water Tower Campus. The times are as follows:
- 11:30 a.m., Mass, Saint James Chapel at the corner of Rush and Pearson
- 5:15 p.m., Mass, Kasbeer Hall at the Corboy Law Center, WTC
- 8 p.m., Service, Kasbeer Hall at the Corboy Law Center, WTC
Communion will not be given at the services.
Throughout the Lenten season, Sacramental Life is hosting activities for daily reflection, prayer, and almsgiving. On Thursday evenings, attend Mass at the Ignatius House Chapel at 9:30 p.m. There will also be Soup and Substance luncheons each week, with the first on February 24 from noon to 1:3o p.m. on the fourth floor of the Klarchek Information Commons.
