Map: Domination by Major Cities in the NBA
Since the NBA was formed, certain cities and states have been notorious for winning, and winning a lot. Here’s a look at which cities have won NBA championships since the league was founded in 1946. Only 19 different cities in 15 states have won a championship since then. There are currently 30 teams in the league, but there have been many more franchises due to relocation. The Boston Celtics have won 17 times and the Lakers have won 16 championships. Compare this to football where the Pittsburgh Steelers have won more Super Bowls than anyone, with 6.
For whatever reason, teams in the NBA have shown greater chances of repeating or even
three-peating” where in other sports, the idea of that seems almost non-existent.
