A Company Named Isidore

I have been away from this blog for a while.  It feels good to return.

I originally named this the Sustainability and Social Enterprise blog.  In my post on February 27, 2013, I made the point that Environmental Sustainability—ES (which is what I intended) and Social Enterprise—SE are not the same, although they can intersect, by […]

A Brief Study in Contrasts

I am cleaning off my computer’s desktop today and ran across this brief note to myself. It is an interesting, if short, study in contrasts. The story showed up on ENN (Environmental News Network) and I somehow kept it for some reason. It is almost a year old, but still relevant. […]

Body Wash and Plastic Pollution

By now I am sure everybody has heard about the Pacific Gyre, also known as the Pacific Garbage Patch. If not, peak at this http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/oceanography/great-pacific-garbage-patch.htm and this http://theweek.com/article/index/227878/the-pacific-oceans-growing-plastic-problem and this http://io9.com/5911969/lies-youve-been-told-about-the-pacific-garbage-patch. But have you yet heard about how bodies of water closer to home – some of the Great Lakes – are awash in plastic? […]

My Hope for the Pope

On My Hope for Pope Francis

Father Garanzini, president of Loyola University Chicago, greeted the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio with the following statement. “It was with great anticipation that we learned yesterday that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as our new pope, Pope Francis.” He added, the selection of “the first Jesuit elected […]

Social Enterprise is not the same as Sustainability

In a recent webinar presented by the Great Lakes Chapter of International Society of Sustainable Professionals (ISSP) the point was argued that eco-efficiency is not the same thing as sustainability.  Likewise, sustainability is not the same thing as social enterprise.  Since this is the Social Enterprise and Sustainability Blog I thought it […]

Christmas Gifting (ughhh!)

I don’t know if you like the way Sear’s has re-positioned the traditional “giving” to something they call “gifting”.  I, myself, find it distastful.  I mean, it is just an ugly word.  Gifting.  Very much the creation of some marketer, I am sure.  In this time of both holiday celebrations and a drive […]

A Brief Introduction

I am Prof. Benton. Dr. B to many. I am a professor in the Department of Marketing, and currently chair of the department. Until recently my primary teaching responsibilities included the research methods classes (undergraduate and graduate), but most know me for my other courses. I started teaching MARK 410 Business […]

About this blog

Solving the world's sustainability problems depends on how well businesses and consumers understand the implications of their products and practices, as well as how business leaders adopt strategies that allow for sustainability and profit to coexist. It also takes a real shift in thinking and one's mind set. This blog will introduce and encourage a conversation, among students in the Quinlan School of Business, and elsewhere in the university and the world, about the issues involved in sustainable business practices, and sustainable consumption choices. I will occasionally entertain guest blogs from undergraduate or graduate students or alums. If, at some point, you want to guest blog, contact me.
