Quinlan Ramble to NYC – Bloomberg

Quinlan Ramble to New York City
Day #7, 3/10/2017

Bloomberg
Macy’s Inc.

Lourdes Guzmán Sánchez (Quinlan ‘18)

Today, March 10th, we woke up to a snowy frigid New York weather. We were lucky to get some warm coffee before heading to the first company of the day. It was the last day we were going to do company visits and we knew that we had to get the best out of it. The first company we visited was Bloomberg. Nicholas Jayson received us and offered us snacks from their kitchen bar and guided us later throughout the company building.bloomberg

The building is impressive. It is very transparent, everything is open, there are few walls and everything feels very interactive. The company wants their workers to be connected and communicate with each other so they only have elevators that reach certain levels. To some of them you must take the stairs which brings the employees together. The company’s environment was different from others that we have visited.  As an international student from Loyola Andalucía in Spain, I have felt very welcomed today at Bloomberg. We got told that the draws that are on the walls of the building represent different cultures and their acceptance to Bloomberg.

Francesco Tonin received us in a big conference room. He explained us with detail how their system work and what his day to day looks like. He explained us how socio-political events shaped the recent past in the foreign exchange macro area. He also showed us how the help chat worked. We learned that there is always someone on the back end answering those questions and it is available 24 hours since it is composed by help desk employees from Japan, the US and London. It is amazing how this company works. He also explained us that they created an algorithm that they use to have their reports highlighted to be more efficient and effective. It was also very inspiring getting to know that the train their employers with real experts. Francesco described it as a continuous learning experience.

We also had the opportunity to meet Tom Keene, editor-at-large for Bloomberg Television and Radio. We ran into him in the museum they have at Bloomberg.  Where he educated us on the history of the company and as to why they came to be the company they are today.20170310_113643

Overall, I was inspired from listening to the speakers, touring  Bloomberg ‘s building and learning about their values._DSC5995
