Quinlan Ramble to NYC – NYC Mayor’s Office

Quinlan Ramble to New York City
Day #6, 3/9/2017

NYC Major’s Office
Late Show with Steven Colbert

Jessica Mendez (Quinlan ’18)

On Thursday, March 9th, the Ramble group met downstairs in the hotel lobby to prepare for a day that would be quite a change of pace for us business students! Our first stop of the day was visiting the New York City Mayor’s Office. Although we did not get the chance to meet the mayor, we did have the chance to meet and talk with two people working there.

The group rambled to Lower Manhattan to the office building in which many of the Mayor’s offices are located. Once we were checked in through security, our group had the chance to meet Joe Musso, Senior Program Manager at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, and Jorge Luis Paniagua Valle, Assistant Director of Talent Development at the Mayor’s Office of Appointments and also a Loyola alum. During our time with these two men, we learned about what public servants were and the process in which they are hired as well as what the general plan was for NYC’s development in the face of climate change, growing inequality, increasing population, and aging infrastructure.
Afterwards, came the best part of the trip! Our group was accompanied by Mr. Valle, Mr. Musso, Dean Stevens, and other staff and were given a tour of NYC’s City Hall, which was right across the street.

Once being cleared through another round of security, our group entered the vicinity in which our country’s forefathers governed our young nation! This place was not only mindbogglingly historic but also breathtakingly beautiful! We were standing in the exact places in which captivated people listened to Alexander Hamilton read aloud “breaking news” and in 1812 could casually peer at the artistry that was the original NYC City Hall.pastedImage (1)

Inside City Hall’s front doors was a statue cast from the original life sized marble statue of George Washington from which no more casts are allowed to taken!

Our tour guide showed us the Governor’s Room painted in “French Green” where portraits of the US’s first leaders adorned the walls and original wooden chairs lined the room (roped off of course). Our guide also showed and told us about the City Council’s Chambers, which are actually open to the public, where budget hearings were actually taking place. pastedImage (3)

The juxtaposition of learning about the long history that took place in NYC’s City Hall and seeing current governmental processes take place there was quite the experience! For me, a business student passionate about social justice, the experience was incredibly inspiring. The whole time in City Hall, my chest felt like it was going to explode with excitement at the very idea of being in a career where I could focus entirely on making real change happen for people. The visit to the NYC Mayor’s office was a necessary reminder that public service is an option for business students and that public service needs students with our business skills.
