We had the privilege to visit Revolt Media and connect with Loyola Alumni, Adina Smith SVP, Integrated Marketing, Brand & PR of Revolt Media. A little background on Revolt, is that it is co-owned by Comcast and focuses on providing consumable media focused on music and artists. Revolt has a nationwide and international audience. Their primary target is young adults. They broadcast via television and the internet. Launched in October 2013, Revolt is part of a portfolio of companies owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs.
An unexpected guest star came into play when his son Quincy Brown, an American actor, recording artist, and entrepreneur came in to talk to us. Quincy talked about his newly released album as well as welcoming us to the company and wishing us the best of luck.
From there we went through a speed through presentations that focused with aspects of integrated marketing, as sales, public relations, audience insights and strategy, talent, production management, and finances of the company. Being able to hear about their hiring processes, to “day to day” demands of the job, shed some light onto how hard the industry was. Revolt is a very relaxed company, compared to the traditional suit and tie workplaces that we visited earlier in the week. Aside from the relaxed workplace, the hiring process itself was intimidating. As described by one of the staff members was a two-interview process that they ask their employees to dress how they express themselves and not in a traditional suit. Once going through the first round of interview all employees that work for Mr. Combs must be interviewed by him. So, once the worker stepped into his office and Mr. Combs was on his phone always and looked up once to ask him, “Why should I hire you?”
This allowed us to see the different work environment’s that can exists but at the end of the day that you must be yourself and work hard towards your goals. They emphasized to us that we must be natural when connecting to people as well as drilling as other companies did to connect. Most of the employers detailed of how they got their jobs was through recommendations of other people. An panelist couldn’t have said it better, “Your network is your net worth.”
