Cross- Cultural Connections: Meeting with Rijeka University
On Friday, we were able to meet with Professor Garbac and Professor Dlacic from Rijeka University’s economics department. This was especially important to us, since professor Dlacic’s presentation at the macromarketing conference in 2015 was a big reason as to why this trip was started in the first place. She spoke about the issues with education in the country, and that’s what really sparked our interested in developing a case study with students from Croatia. As the project progressed, we realized that that wouldn’t be a reasonable deliverable within the timeframe that we had available. However, we still were able to put together a meaningful project within the time that we had, and maybe a combined case study will be a possibility in the future given our collaboration with professors Garbac and Dlacic.
During this meeting, (which, by the way, was held in a tower of a 12th century castle overlooking the Adriatic Sea), we were able to meet with some students of the university, one of was a PhD student, and another that had just finished her master’s. They both were able to share their stories, research interests, and tell us a bit about their work history. Both the professors and the students were very eager to ask us questions about the work that we do and why we were in Croatia in the first place. We talked about research and projects for over three hours, and the meeting ended with them extending an offer to collaborate on projects over the next year, which we were all very excited about.
While we are not sure what our next steps will be with Rijeka University, I would say personally that the meeting went very well, and I would love to see future Loyola students make use of this connection with a great school abroad.
