Drones to Drive Efficiencies

The Supply Chain Digest editorial team recaps a number of ways Walmart and others are using drones in their operations. According to Walmart’s VP of Last Mile and Emerging Science, they are just beginning to understand how drones could be utilized. Inventory optimization is the current focus, and Walmart plans to have the flying machines featuring specialized imaging technology operating in their warehouses in 6-9 months. The drones will help Walmart track inventory (quantities and position in the warehouse) more closely, ultimately facilitating improved efficiencies and service levels.

The article also references other applications for drones, notably in the yard management space.

While Amazon may have lit the fuse by calling for their use in home delivery, drones appear to be gaining traction in more confined spaces where legal and regulatory hurdles are lower.
