Zagreb – The City

National Archives of Zagreb

In between meetings with various companies and students, we have had the opportunity to take in the sites of Zagreb.  Zagreb is the capital and largest city in Croatia.  Of the 4 million people in Croatia, 1 million people live here.  We started our trip by taking a free walking tour of the city to help us get our bearings straight.  This tour took us through the main square, upper town and lower town.  We saw the main government buildings stationed around St. Mark’s Church.

Everyday at noon, the canon from the Lotrscak Tower is fired.  The reaction to the loud boom is one way to spot the tourists from the locals.  The country’s strong Roman Catholic population is on display throughout the many churches situated in the city including the Porta di Pietra which was previously a stone gate leading to the city and is now a shrine where people go to leave candles and pray.  The tallest building in the city is the Cathedral of the Assumption which has been under reconstruction since it was nearly destroyed in the 1880 Zagreb Earthquake.

We also had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Broken Relationships.  No, this museum is not a historical museum related to the former Yugoslavia relationships but rather a collection of items of failed relationships that people from all over the world have donated.  The city has lots of parks and green space including a beautiful botanical garden.  Of course since we are meeting with Kras, we had to visit the Kras chocolate café and sample chocolate and gelato.  Overall, the city of Zagreb has beautiful sites and we’ve enjoyed walking throughout the entire city.
