A Word from the Wise: A Greeting from Professor Mike Welch

As the faculty member who was selected by the students to accompany them on their trip to Croatia, I am delighted to be the advisor for this student-directed independent study course. It is important for students to be able to take the knowledge that they have obtained during their MBA experience at Quinlan and apply it in a meaningful and valuable way in an international context. In consulting with myself and Dr. Nenad Jukic, who is from Croatia, the students have put together an agenda and a series of meetings that will allow them to explore the culture of Croatia as well as gain a better understanding of the manner in which this country operates in the world. Moreover, in its ongoing interaction with Kras, a leading manufacturer of confectionary products in Croatia, they will explore opportunities for that Croatian company to expand its exports to the United States.

As Quinlan considers the ways in which it can give students the chance to have a better understanding of the global market, courses in which the students can design and lead meaningful experiences in other countries give our students a unique opportunity to both apply their learnings as well as immerse themselves in the culture of a country and have a first-hand look at issues that real companies are wrestling with as they expand their global presence. We are looking forward to a wonderful and rewarding experience here in Croatia.
-Professor Mike Welch, Management Department at the Quinlan School of Business
