 I.  In days of old when dragons still roamed the earth-summer jobs for both college/H.S students were important at three levels.

  • Decent money (Relatively Speaking)
  • Life maturity
  • Work experience

 

II.  For my generation summer jobs were to develop a “work ethic” as much as for the money.

  • We learned life lessons about the danger, boredom, and necessity of work
  • We learned about Darwinian Endurance
  • We learn social/financial and class lessons.
  • Work was a melting pot in regard to race, age, gender, finances.
  • We learned to set goals
  • We learned to recognize that capitalism, freedom, and responsibility are all connected to work.

 

III.  To be fair: Today many students do volunteer work, go to school, and get internships.

 

IV.  Also, because of the “New economy” and unemployment rates, some formally summer jobs or part-time jobs are now being taken over by a “Full-time-Part-Time” “workforce”: i.e. newspaper delivery, McDonalds.

 

V.  Also, upper middle class children want to/able to travel, summer school, work on a documentary, go to an Ashram.

 

VI.  But many who want to work can’t.

    • Only 46% of people who applied- found work.
    • 14 major cities report youth unemployment as becoming a serious social/financial issue.

 

VII.  Finances: A great irony!

  • Even if you find work does it help?
  • College tuition has risen 1,200% since 1978.
  • College tuition range between $22,000 – $52,200 room/board.
  • In mid 1960s- a $2.50 an hour job, 40 hours a week, for 3 months=$1,200. Room/Board/Tuition- NIU (1963)=$1,200
  • Now a days, $1,200 mostly covers the cost of your text books and lab-fees!
