A Day at the Races

This year’s FBC Member Social was an afternoon filled with family fun, memories, and anticipation as bets were placed and the horses raced for the winning title at Arlington International Racetrack. As the races began, our families relaxed and enjoyed a delicious lunch and refreshing cocktails in a private Marquee tent. It was a great turnout, with lots of little kids, their parents, and grandparents. An “Arlington University” professor presented the ins and outs of betting while our members debated over which horses to place wagers on. One of our families even held a competition between their G3 and G4 family members on whose horse would win the race. Little did they know, they chose the same horse! How’s that for generational consensus?

As a celebratory way of representing the Family Business Center and its members, one of the races was named “Family Business Matters.” Before the race, several members and I received a “behind-the-scenes” experience where we learned about Arlington Park’s history, toured the stables, and the kids were able to brush and feed the horses. Did you know horses love peppermint? We also had the honor of attending a trophy presentation where we were able to meet the winning horse, Flattering Touch, and jockey, and take a group photo with them.

While many FBC events focus on family business from a professional perspective, such as the upcoming Family Business Stewardship Institute Kickoff, we realize the importance of building our community and solidifying relationships between our Members.

One of the children from our families asked: “Can we do that again tomorrow?” We think that’s the sign of a successful event.
