NxG: Get Social

It was a relaxed, social evening as up-and-coming NextGens gathered at Chicago’s sheek Epic Restaurant this past week to mingle and share their family business experiences during NxG: Get Social. While savory appetizers and cold cocktails were being served, NextGens took the opportunity to bond with one another and connect over shared experiences and opinions behind family businesses.

The event featured guest speakers who shared examples of personal experiences within their family businesses. Ann Hingst of Mid-America Beverage shared her story of working for both the family business and a company outside the family business, as well as her role in leading the family governance process. Katie Napleton of Ed Napleton Dealership Group spoke about her recent entrance into her family business and the essential role that she filled within the company, as well as the expectations she and her family had for her as an employee of the family business. Lou Pagano II of Ferrara Candy Co. concluded by discussing the evolution of his family business over time, and how taking part in FBC’s Next Generation Leadership Institute (NGLI) helped him to better understand himself and his leadership style, and strengthened his skills within his family’s business.

While many FBC events focus on helping family businesses with things such as leadership, communication, and succession planning, events like this, our member social, and our Women’s Event, focus solely on facilitating connections between family business members. These connections are what make the Family Business Center’s community unique and strong. It creates bonds that can help the members to achieve their own goals or help them solve conflicts. Thanks to all who came out, especially to our hosts Ann, Lou, and Katie for their candor sharing of insightful stories.
