Graduate Assistantship Available in the Graduate School

The Graduate School is offering a one-year assistantship to a doctoral student currently enrolled in a graduate program in the Graduate School. The Graduate Assistant will work directly with other graduate students in supporting the submission and formatting of their theses and dissertations. The successful applicant must be highly organized and extremely detail-oriented. In addition, the applicant must have outstanding interpersonal skills. This position is renewable for an additional year based on performance.

All interested candidates should send—electronic only—a cover letter, resume, and the names and contact information of two references to Dr. Jessica Horowitz at jhorow@luc.edu. Applications must be submitted by June 14th at 5:00 p.m.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct format checks via the university’s ETD Administrator
  • Correspond with students regarding questions about formatting and the final copy process
  • Help students in person at the Graduate School when they appear
  • Review final copy submissions:
    • Electronic: evaluate manuscripts in PDF format; receive supplemental materials
    • Hard copy: check in paper manuscripts; receive supplemental materials
  • Maintain spreadsheets that track each student’s standing
  • Send materials to library
  • Conduct formatting workshops
  • Revise formatting manual when needed
  • Suggest revisions to website and to dissertation/thesis materials as needed
  • Work at Graduate School functions such as orientation, conferences, and commencement
  • Attend any meetings regarding final copy process

Job Requirements:

  • Doctoral student who has completed coursework and field examinations
  • Evidence of effective organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Administrative experience/familiarity with administrative tasks
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexibility: ability to accommodate varying tasks and shifting workload
  • Calm, pleasant, and confident demeanor; skilled in facilitating work with people who are under pressure
  • Writing and editing skills
  • Ability to spend 3–5 hours each day in computer-based work
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
  • Ability to give effective presentations (formatting workshops; one-on-one meetings)

Details & Benefits:

  • 20 hours/week; 12 month renewable appointment
