Vegetarian Express, commonly called Tamales Express, is well known at the Loyola Farmers Market for their delicious Hispanic food. Run by Raul Diaz, Vegetarian Express has been offering fresh-cooked dishes for both vegetarians and meat-eaters at the Loyola Farmers Market since 2013.
With tasty food options ranging from vegetarian or meat tamales to elotes and mango con chile to smoothies, Vegetarian Express has diverse menu items everyone will love. Elotes is a dish that combines the spiciness of chili powder with the savory flavor of parmesan cheese on a corn cob. Mango con chile combines the sweetness of a mango with the spicy “kick” of chili powder for a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. Hungry yet?
Raul’s favorite dish, which also happens to be a customer favorite, is the Amish chicken tamale with red mole salsa. He cooks up the chicken and mixes it into the corn dough. From there, the savory meat-dough mix is wrapped in a corn husk and steamed to perfection. It is served with either a red or green salsa that soaks into the dough.
Raul loves to cook these tamales and many other delicious items at his store in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. Raul opened the store back in 2011, and he has had much success since then. The store is located at 3109 N. Halsted Street, just two blocks from the Belmont El stop and is open every day from 10 am to 10 pm. Whether you visit their store or find them at the Loyola Farmers Market every Monday through October 17th, you’ll be sure to find a dish you love at Vegetarian Express!
