On Tuesday, May 13th, a group of Loyola connected students and school psychologists presented at the Morton Freshman Center in Cicero. The school serves a primarily Latino population in this community that borders Chicago. The group gave presentations to students as part of a community service project sponsored by the Bilingual/Bicultural Workgroup of the Illinois School Psychologists Association. Students at the freshmen center were informed generally about the profession of school psychology, training requirements, and the role school psychologists play in schools and other settings. Given the background of most of the students there, special emphasis was placed on the high need for bilingual/bicultural school psychologists and the reality that in many cases school psychologists who serve students of color often have to act as advocates for the students and families they serve.
