Jack Kavanagh, PhD – Professor Emeritus, School of Education 1971 – 2006

It is with sorrow that the School of Education notes the passing on March 8th of a highly respected and admired faculty member, Dr. Jack A. Kavanagh.  Jack arrived at Loyola in 1971 and through outstanding scholarly contributions to our school through teaching, research, and service he was promoted to Associate Professor (1977) and to Professor (1984).  His teaching and research interests were in educational foundations and more specifically in statistics and research methods.  His outstanding ethic of care for his students and for his faculty and staff colleagues throughout his long career helped many students overcome both personal and academic hurdles as he taught them the science and application of statistics and other research methods.  After serving for 35 years in the SOE, Jack retired in 2006 as Professor Emeritus. He served the School of Education as department chair multiple times and as Associate Dean. An avid fisherman and son of the North Woods of Wisconsin, Jack was 68 years old. He is survived by his wife DeEtte (Dee) and daughters Karen Mack, Katherine Herdus, Kristine Kavanagh, and five grandchildren. Jack will be missed for his sense of humor, big heart and great smile.
