Every day nearly 247 billion emails are sent to user mailboxes around the globe. According to the Radicati Group, in 2009 nearly 81% of these emails contained spam or viruses.  Phishing (pronounced like “fishing”) emails are intended to steal your identity by asking for personal data or directing you to web sites or to send an email.

Will ITS Ask Me For My Password?

Remember, ITS will never ask you for your password or other confidential information through email. If you are unsure of the validity of an email, then contact the organization via the phone. Do not reply to the message, as it will send information back to the phisher.

Where can I find more information?

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint & Save Some Cash

You may have noticed our new wallpaper campaign that started this week across campuses in our multimedia labs. Each week Digital Media Services will feature a new tip or recommendation for software and hardware to try out. This week, the staff elected to identify ways in which we can help reduce our carbon footprint as a campus, as well as helping you save some money in the process. One quick and easy way is to simply print in duplex (two-sided print job) from our on-campus multimedia labs.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

In a recent review, TechSoup – a non-profit technology resource found that “the average office worker uses 130 lbs. of paper/year. That is approximately 37 reams of paper per person or almost 4 boxes of paper.” By printing 100 pages in duplex , you cut your overall C02 contribution by more than a half-pound! Not only can you help the Earth, but also keep more money in your wallet.

Cost Savings

While you’ve helped cut back on your total CO2 contributions, you’ll also notice a reduced price for printing. Let’s take that same 100-page document you would have printed earlier. If you printed that document single-sided, you would pay $7.00; while if you selected the duplex option, you would only pay $5.00. That’s a $2 savings!

So how do I print in duplex?

PC’s

  1. From any application, choose “File”, “Print”.
  2. Click the “Preferences” button:
    step2
  3. Select “Two-side (Duplex) Printing” and click “OK” to continue:
    step3

Mac’s

  1. From any application, choose “File”, “Print”.
  2. Click the down arrow button next to the printer:

  3. Select “Two-sided” and click “Print” to continue:
    oneprint3

For additional information about duplex printing, speak with a Digital Media Services Advisor at any of our staffed multimedia labs or check out instructions near your printer.
