About the Symposium
This year’s symposium focuses on developments within the ever-changing data privacy landscape. Experts from a variety of industries and professional disciplines will provide insight on key issues surrounding data privacy compliance, as well as what may lie ahead for data regulation.

Distinguishing Data Privacy & Cybersecurity – Professor Charlotte Tschider

Charlotte Tschider is an Assistant Professor at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a member of the Beazley Institute for Health Law & Policy. She regularly advises organizations on global privacy and cybersecurity matters, with a specific expertise in the medical device sector on artificial intelligence and global data strategy. Professor Tschider is the author of International Cybersecurity and Privacy Law in Practice, now in its second edition, and Cybersecurity Law. Prior to her time in academia, she led technology and legal teams at a variety of large private and public organizations for nearly two decades, including Target Corporation, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and Medtronic, Inc., and has consulted with many more on healthcare and information technology topics.

 

Featured Speaker – Jay Edelson

Jay Edelson is the Founder and CEO of Edelson PC. He is widely regarded as the top consumer privacy attorney in America. His privacy class actions have resulted in over $3b in settlements and judgments including the largest ever cash privacy settlement ($650m) and the largest privacy jury verdict ($925m).  He has been appointed to represent state and local regulators on some of the largest issues of the day including privacy suits against Google, Facebook, Uber, Marriott, and Equifax. Jay has received special recognition for his success in taking on Silicon Valley, with the national press dubbing him and his firm the “most feared” litigators in Silicon Valley and, according to the New York Times, tech’s “babyfaced … boogeyman.” He is also the host of the Non-Compliant podcast.

 

Paving the Way for Privacy Panelists

Lauren Caisman is a Partner at Bryan Cave with extensive experience in biometric issues and commercial litigation. Lauren has helped clients navigate significant class action litigation under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). She has implemented biometric privacy-compliant policies and procedures for clients across the country and across all industries and has broad litigation experience in state and federal courts, arbitrations, and administrative agency proceedings helping clients in various industries resolve commercial and contractual disputes, as well as media, First Amendment, and other content-related problems. Lauren is a Board Member of the Federal Bar Association’s Younger Lawyers Division and serves on the Council of the Illinois State Bar Association Civil Practice & Procedure Section.

David Stauss is Chair of Hush Blackwell’s privacy and cybersecurity practice group and an accredited Privacy Law Specialist and Fellow of Information Privacy with the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He has handled numerous disputes involving complex information security issues, including wire fraud transfer schemes and data breach litigation and regularly counsels clients on all aspects of privacy and cybersecurity, including complying with U.S. and international privacy laws and preparing for and responding to data security incidents. In 2018, he assisted in drafting Colorado’s cybersecurity legislation, serving as the outside subject-matter expert for the Colorado Attorney General’s office. David is a frequent author and speaker on privacy and cybersecurity.

David Zetoony is an internationally recognized data privacy and security leader and Co-Chair of Greenberg Traurig’s U.S. Data, Privacy, and Cybersecurity Practice. In addition to authoring The Desk Reference Companion to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), he has defended corporate privacy and security practices in investigations initiated by government and other data privacy and security regulatory agencies around the world. David has received numerous awards and recognitions including being named the 2021 Go-To Privacy Law Thought Leader and the 2016 Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Trailblazer by the National Law Journal. He has also been recognized by JD Supra as one of the most widely read names in the areas of privacy and security.

 

Developments in Healthcare Data Regulation Panelists

Maggie Hanjani is a Data and Privacy Global Senior Advisor, Sr. Principal Legal Counsel and Privacy by Design Lead for Medtronic. Although she has multiple titles, Maggie excels at translating global privacy regulations in an efficient and business friendly manner and created and implemented Medtronic’s Privacy by Design process.  Maggie is a graduate of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, where she currently resides. Maggie is an experienced Privacy Counsel with a demonstrated history of business acumen in Healthcare Privacy. She has specific experience in implementing Global Privacy principles, including HIPAA, GDPR, and CCPA, State AG Privacy investigations, incident response, organizational arrangements, Data Privacy strategy, and Privacy by Design in the medical device industry.

Greg Stein is Senior Counsel in Information Technology and Intellectual Property at Cleveland Clinic and a Fellow of Information Privacy. He advises on privacy and cybersecurity matters for Cleveland Clinic’s operations in the United States and Canada and has helped establish the data privacy and information security program for Cleveland Clinic London, a new hospital. He collaborates closely with the Cybersecurity Department members on various matters, including incident response preparedness, cyber risk from third parties and their products (including Internet connected medical devices), and implementing appropriate policies and procedures. He has also negotiated internet of things licenses and cloud agreements and advised companies on privacy obligations connected with the internet of things.

Nick Weil is a consultant and attorney with Epsilon Life Sciences specializing in data compliance and health care regulation. He is an IAPP-certified information technologist and an HCCA-certified compliance professional with previous experience as chief compliance officer, data privacy officer, and corporate counsel. Nick concentrates in information compliance issues and risks, including privacy law, cyber security regulations, information blocking rules, and interoperability requirements for organizations processing health information and other sensitive data. As a consultant, he has led internal investigations and data breach incident response teams, provided interim compliance and data governance leadership services, and conducted privacy, security, and regulatory reviews, assessments and inventories.
