It's always good to practice some basic common questions that are asked in an interview. A person should be confident and spontaneous when answering any questions.

As someone who in a previous life used to hire & manage personnel in major contracts, I can't tell you how many graduate applicants we'd receive who were within a cat's whisker of each other academically. I had two candidates, similarly qualified - one of these candidates didn't know what a 'Shire' is. OK if you're not British you might not know - but he was from London. Who got the job? My point being it can be the smallest thing that separates the candidates. Sure you can make decisions and solve problems, but if you don't know what a Shire is come on...!

Great post, Marty!

There's a lot of sites to learn about the culture of foreign countries. But none of them really prepare you for your time on an international assignment or life as an expat in a host country.

Besides working hard - you really drive that point home - there's only so much you can do to prepare yourself for this specific situation.
One of the easiest solutions to prepare yourself is to connect with like-minded people and specifically expatriates on international assignments in the country you are going to as well.

Sure, Facebook and Twitter will help you get in touch with other people in the same situation but it takes a long time...

There's networks and online communities for expatriates (for example InterNations at http://www.internations.org/ which will get you in contact with other people in the same situation right away.

Make sure to join a community for expatriates to stay up to date, exchange info, get to know other people in the same situation and to network. Because second to "working hard" is "networking".
