About Blackacre
Law school can be way too serious sometimes, so we decided to take a light-hearted approach….Here’s a little bit about how and why Blackacre was revived:
I first learned of the student-newspaper, Blackacre, when I was reading through The First 100 Years, the law school’s centennial book, compiled by Professor Haney. Like any inquiry-oriented law student, I began thinking, where did it go? More importantly, how can I get it started again?
Before consulting anyone from the school’s administration, I did what any normal person would do…I asked my peers at a barbecue, after they’d been…relaxing. Feeling empowered by the favorable reception of the idea, I handpicked a group of Loyola’s finest and we began brainstorming. After “wowing” the Deans we received the thumbs-up, and with the help of several others to whom we owe gratitude here we are today.
So, what is Blackacre? To be honest, we are not really sure. But what we had in mind when we endeavored to revive
Blackacre was for it to be an easily accessible forum for student opinion. Currently there is no such medium for students to voice their opinions publicly, whether it be a complaint or commendation. Throughout the existence of the print version of Blackacre its content varied from law school community news to humorous critical commentary of the school. We’re happy to see it resemble either of these structures, or something in between. For this first issue we tried to put our own spin on legal issues you have likely heard or read about in the media. Additionally, we have included event-reporting, interviews, and some other miscellaneous articles. We invite you to peruse the site and leave feedback in the comment sections.
We decided to keep the name Blackacre because its elusiveness is fitting for our objective. Who owns Blackacre? Well, if I learned anything in Property it was that no one really does. But we would like us all to “own” it. This is yours, so let us know what you want it to be. Tell us what we are doing wrong or, hopefully, what we are doing right. I hope you enjoy what we have to offer, we surely had a great time reviving it.
