Fun in the Sun

Over the past few weeks so much has gone on at Loyola. Many of these events helped to open my eyes to the cultures that surround me every day. Just last Saturday I attended SASA (South Asian Student Alliance) Night. It was probably one of the best events I have ever attended. This program included a wide variety of traditional dances among the students in SASA. They also had very elaborate outfits that represented traditional cultural attire. Even through the different dance selections a story was developing between a woman who had an arranged marriage and her sister who had been accustomed to American traditions. Overall I know I will be back next year to this show and I will definitely be telling everyone I know.

Another event I recently attend was the collaboration of Hillel and Alpha Psi Lambda. This was something that I  never really expected to see but it was a perfect touch. They were both teaching dances to people that walked into CFSU. Some of the dances were Greek and others included Bachata and Salsa. Since it was held in CFSU, many students were ready to join in the fun. It was a good intro in the Spring season.

Now we are just about in our last week of school. Soon we will be on our way back home basking in the sun and enjoying the warm weather. But FIRST we have to get through this very stressful week. We are almost at the finish line just a few more steps and before we know it we will be out. Time to knock these finals out.

Good luck with finals fellow classmates!!!!

Ready or Not!

It is now April and as Loyola students we are in the final stretch. We begin to get ready for the summer. Counting down the days until summer is here. We will finally be able to relax our eyes and brains for a couple of months. But it also seems like everything is beginning to pile up on us. We have had endless amount of papers and projects due and it seems like there is little to no time to do them.  We all begin to look like we are zombies because sleep is no longer a friend of ours.  It’s time to buckle down and get ready for the hectic month that is ahead for us. Next thing we know April will have flown by and it will be time to celebrate for the summer!!

A Break before Spring

We’ll it seems that Spring Break is slowly coming to an end for me, but it was somewhat fun while it lasted.  I always wonder why Spring Break is before the spring season.  Could it be that the school is trying to help us save money on our Spring Break trips or are they just trying to keep us away from the real fun when everyone else goes on Spring Break. Either way, I am still happy just to be on break, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like a break at all.
Most of the time there are exams when we come back or just miscellaneous things that  keep us busy during our own Spring Break.  I know somehow I have been stuck with all the errands in my household since I seem to have the most free time on my hands. And in between that I have been studying for a Bio Lab exam.  Now I know that’s not as bad as other students who (I feel extreeeeemely sorry for!!!!!!!!) have the majority of their midterms and exams when they come back.  I’m starting to get used to this pattern, but maybe it is time for a break in the middle of spring.  Sounds good to me.
Hopefully, I can enjoy the last two days of break before I have to go back into this robotic mode of studying day in and day out.
PEAAACEEE!!!

Busy is not the word

So have you ever felt like so much is going on in your life and it could not get any busier buuuut it does?  That is definitely how I have felt this week.  With all the activities that have been going on and all the work it’s like I’m running back and forth, back and forth.  I am definitely looking forward to the weekend.

A couple things that definitely caught my interest this week included A.R.M. which did a greaaat job in making students and faculty aware of the problems that can be overlooked on this college campus and many other college campuses.  On Monday during the kickoff it was nice being able to hear some of the feelings of different minorities on campus.  It definitely helped to make us recognize that all minorities go though problems and they should not be overlooked. Sooo I definitely appreciated that. Another thing was our BMI meeting where we were able to talk about certain issues as brothers, ranging from academics to our daily life.
And for all of you all who missed the Fashion show on Saturday you missed something good.  As students I thought we put it together very well and worked with what we had in order to create a spectacular show.  It was an interesting experience for me and I’m sure my friends that also participated.
Other than that I have been just been running around taking tests and trying to get things together before Spring Break! And yes, I know that’s the life of just about every Loyola Student.
Peace :)

Hello!

My name is Aubrey Harrison and I am a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago. I have lived in Chicago all of my life and I am definitely used to the cold. I’m majoring in Psychology and I have a minor in Computer Science. Yes I know that’s an interesting combination. I plan on going to graduate school and becoming a Clinical Psychologist. I know you are probably asking where the Computer Science minor comes in but I just love computers so I said, "why not major in something I love?" I am also a commuter, coming from the Southside of Chicago every day, but I definitely don’t mind.

Outside of academics I am very active with BMI (Black Men’s Initiative), Black Cultural Center, and S.T.A.R.S at Loyola. Usually I am running around making sure I get involved in just about anything I can within those groups. In my spare time I also try to get to know as many people as possible. If you asked my friends, they probably would say I know too many people on campus. So please don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me on campus.
