Sand Mandala in Norville

In anticipation of the Dalai Lama’s visit, Loyola and the Tibet Center of Chicago are proud to welcome Lama Ngawang Chojor to campus.  While here, the Lama will be carrying on a great Tibetan Buddhist tradition of constructing a sand mandala, a spiritual and artistic medium of meditation to promote enlightenment and compassion.

The construction of the mandala began Wednesday, April 11th at 10AM and will continue through Friday, April 13th. Construction will resume Monday, April 16th and be completed the afternoon of Tuesday, April 17th. The mandala will be open for viewing from April 18th until April 25th between the hours of 10-12PM and 1-4PM. The construction takes place in Norville room 114.

After His Holiness the Dalai Lama speaks on April 26th (around 3:30PM), Lama Ngawang will perform a ceremony in which he’ll sweep the sand into an urn and walk to Hartigan Beach to pour the sand into Lake Michigan.

Don’t miss this chance to visit this wonderful Tibetan artistic and spiritual practice!
